Stainless steel rebar (reinforcement bar) has become a very vital element for any modern constructions
. It is being extensively used in the construction of flyover bridges, tunnels, skyscrapers, retaining walls (that restrains soil on slops), and almost every concrete structures where corrosion prevails. Stainless steel rebar is the perfect substitute of carbon steel reinforcement bar, where the latter failed severely in the corrosive conditions, resulting in intense damage to the structure and causing high repair costs to the country.
Stainless steel is chose for rebar because of its exceptional properties to resist corrosion and at the same time provide better strength over a long period of time. Despite increasing the installation costs in proportion of one to fifteen percent, it proves to be very cost effective substance as it can reduce life cycle cost over longer period of time. Usually stainless steel rebar can last up to 125 years during which it gives strength and protect the structure from corrosion.
In the absence of stainless steel what really used to happen was that the chloride and oxygen came directly in contact with the carbon steel reinforcing bar by penetrating through high strength and durable concrete. This corrode the carbon steel, which resulted in rust formation inside the concrete structure. Because of the high compression of concrete, the extra density of rust that formed inside the structure created tremendous pressure, which produced cracks and even spalling. Hence, the consistency of the concrete structure was endangered.
To overcome this situation where corroding carbon steel compromises the integrity of concrete structure that leads to costly repairs, either environmental conditions needed to be changed or the steel material needed to be changed. With chloride from water and deicing salt from road creeping into concrete, there was no hope of environment. Likewise, oxygen (the main reason for corrosion) cannot be confined from the environment. In such situation, replacing the carbon steel rebar to a with a more corrosion proof, cost effective alloy like stainless steel was the best possible option. Besides, stainless steel rebar turned out to be cost saving element because it eliminated costs of cement corrosion inhibitor, rebar coating and concrete sealers. In addition, stainless steel has following advantages over carbon steel:
1. Good tensile strength.
2. Good ductility.
3. Can last up to 125 years.
4. Good mechanical properties both in high and low temperature.
5. Can be magnetic as well as non-magnetic.
6. Good welding capability.
7. Does not require any coating, insulation or cover.
8. Can easily be transported without cracking or breaking.
9. Highly corrosion resistive.
