Staircases - Have You Considered A Spiral Staircase?

Contrary to what many people believe, staircases can do a lot more than just getting you from one floor to the next

. Sure, of course stairs are there as a practical solution to a problem, but they can also enhance the appearance of any interior part of a building. There's just no denying the fact that an elegant looking staircase imparts a sense of grandeur.

A prime example would be spiral staircases, which is no doubt why they're as popular now as they've ever been. Let's face it; we see spiral stairs virtually every single day of our lives, in shopping malls, palaces, factories, and even on oil rigs. No, a spiral staircase at the airport or at the mall may not be in the running for a design prize, but then again, they weren't designed for visual appeal.

On the other hand, go into some homes, and youll see some of the most elaborate designs imaginable. Some are crafted out of intricately carved lumber, some are constructed from reinforced glass, and many are made from stainless steel or wrought iron. Stainless steel stairs do of course have a number of advantages, which is essentially why they are so popular.

One of the leading advantages of stainless steel stairs is the fact that they require virtually no maintenance at all. Most developed countries have certain laws in place with regards to staircases, and these laws will apply no matter what material you opt for.

Before you go ahead with you staircase, it's advisable to contact your local building inspector in order to determine whether or not you need to comply with any specific building regulations. If the stairs are being installed on business premises, they'll almost certainly have to meet a number of legal requirements, but again, such requirements can vary from one State to the next.As a general rule of thumb, the following regulations apply to spiral stairs:

1. Usable width of the staircase should measure at least 26 inches.

2. The depth of each steal must be at least 7.5 inches.

3. The tread area of every step has to be identical.

4. Step height must be the same for all steps, and may not exceed 9.5 inches.

5. The width of the landing area cannot be less than the width of the stairs.

6. Balusters must prevent anything bigger than 4 inches from falling through.

As previously mentioned, rules and regulations may vary from one State to the next. If your stairs are subject to certain regulations, and they fail to pass an inspection by the building inspector, they will have to be taken down and then done again. As you can no doubt imagine, such a careless mistake can end up costing you a considerable amount of money.
