Stand Up And Be Counted?

Eighty-five percent of Americans think nurses have the highest standards

. That was the finding of a 2012 Gallop poll covering 22 professions. Pharmacists, medical doctors and engineers were also well thought of. Then came politicians. Only 10% of Americans thought elected officials had high or very high standards. The only professionals that were thought less honest than politicians were car salespeople. Only 8% of Americans thought they were honest. All 50 states have versions of the lemon law to protect Americans from cars not meeting standards of quality and performance. Perhaps politicians should pass lemon laws pertaining to themselves.

Fifty-five percent of Americans have received government aid. According to a 2012 report by the Pew Research Center, they have received at least 1 of the government's 6 largest safety net programs. Eight percent have received welfare, 11% Medicaid, 18% food stamps, 22% Medicare, 26% Social Security and 27% unemployment. When including veterans' benefits and federal college loans and grants, 70% of Americans have received aid. Seventy percent of those earning $30,000 or less a year and 39% of those earning at least $100,000 have received government aid. American children have Father Christmas and we adults have Uncle Sam.

Approximately 72,000 Americans are 100 years old or older. That's the world's largest population of centenarians. According to the 2010 Census, for every 20.7 men who reach 100 there are 100 women. Ninety-two percent of centenarians were between ages 100 and 104 and 0.6% were 110 or older. Eighty-six percent of them lived in urban areas with the majority in the South followed by the Midwest, Northeast and West. California had the most and Alaska had the least. Considering the number of people living to 100 increased 5.8% since 2000, we are "living it up" - and up and up.

However, due to the Great Recession there will be fewer Americans than predicted in 2008. That's because there have been fewer immigrants and babies. By 2050 America is projected to have 399.8 million people - 39 million fewer than previously projected. However, diversity will continue to rise. Because minority children are increasing in number and white children are decreasing, no racial or ethnic group under age 18 will be a majority by 2019 - 4 years earlier than expected. America as a whole will reach that point in 2043 - a year later than expected. Based on Census data this must represent a "concensus" of opinion.
