Start Collecting Comic Books For Fun Or Profit
Do you want to learn how to start collecting comic books
? Collectors around the world love to collect baseball cards, stamps, books, and coins, as well as comics. Issues of classic collectibles like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, and others are published monthly.
Comic books are unique collectibles, because they are like having your favorite author publish a brand new chapter every month! To get the most out of your collection, you must determine whether you will be collecting for investment or enjoyment, where you should buy your comic books, and which titles to collect.
Don't Touch The Merchandise
Like many other collectibles, a comic book that is in mint condition is worth more than the same issue in poor condition. That is why the title says for fun "or" profit. If you want to collect comics to read them, their value will be less over time due to the wear and tear.
If you collect them as an investment, they should never be handled by bare hands. Buy new comics that are already in mint condition. These will be encased in plastic bags with acid-free cardboard backer boards. Store them upright in specially designed boxes in a cool, dry, dark place. They will remain clean, mildew-free, protected from fading, with unbroken spines.
If you buy them for reading enjoyment only, you should still store them in bags and boards so that they last as long as possible. If you want to collect for both reading and as an investment, buy two issues of each title. Use one for reading, and store the other safely away to increase in value.
Don't Buy Them Off The Rack
Buy your comic books at a specialty comics or collectibles shop if possible. Books from grocery store wire racks are likely to have been touched and bent by others browsing through them. A specialty store can provide you with pre-bagged comics, and will have an archive of many valuable back issues for sale, which are already bagged and boarded. You can start your collection many decades in the past by purchasing back issues, but be aware that this will cost much more than buying new issues.
Another advantage of a specialty shop is that it may have a hold list or hold box service. You join the program, and provide a list of the comics you want to buy each month. When new issues arrive, the store personnel will add a copy of every comic on your hold list to your hold box. All you have to do is come into the store on a regular basis and purchase the contents of your hold box. There may even be a discount on hold box issues, because the store knows you will be buying a set amount of issues on a regular basis. You'll never miss an issue by using this service.
What Titles Should You Collect?
You can start by collecting those titles that interest you. Most collectors start their collections by purchasing issues of their favorite hero or character. Ask the specialty store which titles or characters are the best choices for an investment or are likely to increase in value.
Browse the store's collection of back issues and see what older titles have issues with high resale prices. First issues or origin issues are especially valuable, and some comics stores allow you to add all #1 issues to your hold box. Always choose to purchase first issues if possible, because you never know which will become valuable collector's items.
Comics books can be collected for fun, profit, or both. Regardless of your motive, consider buying your issues from a specialty comics store to take advantage of their collector-friendly services. You will soon have a growing collection of your favorite comic books to treasure for years to come.
