I was just out of high school and the entrepreneur spirit was running through my veins. My brother and I decided to build furniture for restaurants and lodges. We bought some wood and started building our samples in the garage. Finally, our first samples were ready to show off it was time to start selling.

My brother kept his full-time job to keep feeding us and the business while it grew. I was doing furniture full-time. A few days had passed since we completed our samples and my brother came home after work and asked how our products were being received. I answered that I hadn't gone out to sell yet because the business cards had not yet arrived. My brother walked into the garage, grabbed our samples, figured out a way to fit them in his 240Z and off we went. We closed two good deals that afternoon. No business cards!

Sometimes we find reasons to not take the next step in our business. Fear of the unknown, feeling our pitch is not perfect, perhaps we are missing a tool like a business card. We allow these fears and feelings to cause doubt in our ability to close business.

Since my business card experience, I have never let the lack of a tool or perfect pitch, let alone lack of a business card stop me. When I start to feel doubt, I just remember my personal experience. I also think about Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft, selling an operating system to IBM that he didn't own yet. Or, Steve Jobs attending his first computer fair showing off the Apple II without a "real" operating system. He was supposed to meet with Bill Gates to license Bill's operating system, but he was so overwhelmed with success in his debut, they never got together.

Start now. Great success has come from those who act, even though they didn't have all the tools they felt were necessary to get things done. Entrepreneurs, after all, can effectively replace a great tool with their energy, enthusiasm, and passion for their product or service. It worked for Steve Jobs. It worked for Bill Gates. It worked for my brother and me. Start now!
