Start Your Search Engine Optimization With The Right Keywords

If you are trying to run an online business you know the importance of search engine optimization

. There is so much more involved in this process than ever before and the bulk of the work you do will involve link building and off site popularity campaigns, but the fundamental work that must be done first is choosing keywords to focus on and getting them positioned properly on your web page. Anything you do off site will be more expensive and less effective if you have not started with properly selected keywords that are properly placed on your page.

The first step before beginning any search engine optimization campaign is determining what it is you are selling, what key phrases customers will use to find your products and then selecting which ones to focus on. One of the best places to start this process is at Google Adwords. Here you can search for keywords and find out how frequently these keywords and phrases are searched by people in your country and around the world. Using the Adwords optimizer tool, type in some of the keywords that you would use to find your site if you were looking for it. Google will then list hundreds of relevant key phrases, how often those phrases are searched on the internet and how much people typically spend on Google Adwords competing for those keywords.

From this list of keywords, make a list of the most relevant keywords. To begin, only include phrases that are three words or longer unless the phrase involves a specific trademark name. If they are general (not very descriptive) keywords, the one and two word phrases will have massive amounts of searches but the will not translate into sells as well and if you are just starting out you are not likely to compete. Once you have created this list, categorize the list by importance. Importance is very subjective but this would be a combination of how likely this search would lead to sales and how easily you think you could achieve a good ranking for this phrase (if Adwords shows a lot of competition for the keyword it will likely provide more sales but will take longer to rank well for). I generally suggest to my business partners that they focus their main page on the keywords that are most likely to lead to sales long term, but focus on the easier keywords to start on some of their accessory pages. You want to keep the keywords that you are focusing on to between 1 and 3 per page (only add more if they are highly related!). Any more than that and you are diluting out your focus.

When you start a search engine optimization campaign on your own or through a service, even though you or them may want to target many phrases at once, focus on keywords in a tiered fashion. Start with 5 key phrases and when those rank to a certain level, then start adding more phrases to focus on. The more you start out with, the longer it will take you to rank well for any one. By going sequentially through the keywords you want to focus on, you can become ranked quicker (and thus start making an income) and once you rank well, then focus on the other keywords.


To summarize, even though your search engine optimization campaign will involve only a few short hours focusing on keywords and months focusing on link building and other off site optimization, the keywords are the most important. They provide the focus and direction for your campaign and must be chosen very carefully or you will have spent thousands of dollars and time doing optimization that is not of true value.
