Starting Your Very Own Garden

Starting Your Very Own Garden

Starting Your Very Own Garden

When you were a kid you probably spent hours playing in the dirt. You dug up the earth, created castles, and drove toy cars on the small dirt roads. Being allowed to play in the dirt or sand outdoors as a child may have allowed you an elaborate imagination where you dreamed of adventures in other worlds. Time is limited when we become adults and playing in the dirt becomes a thing of the past. Therefore, many adults will spend countless hours perfecting their garden. As gardeners, you have reasons to get outside and work in the dirt however often your heart desires. If you have been thinking about planting your own garden and want it to thrive, here are some things you should do.

There are only a few times during the year that planting can be done. For some plants to bloom during their optimal bloom time, it is necessary to plant them a few months ahead of time. This is partially due to the time needed for a seed to grow into a blooming plant. It is also because the optimal time to put the seed in the ground is when it has thawed. Some plants will be more plentiful if planted a few seasons prior to their bloom time. If there are specific plants you want to grow in your garden, be sure to learn when the best time to plant is.

Loosen up your garden's soil by digging into the ground before you start planting. Make sure gardening conditions are right or digging could be a bad idea.

Only dig when the soil is moist. The easiest way to tell if your soil is moist is to try to form a ball with it with your hands--if the ball won't form the soil isn't moist enough. If the ground is too moist the ball won't break when you drop it. The very best tools for increasing oxygen flow to the soil are spades and spading forks (which can also be used to turn the soil).

If you are looking for easy plants to grow, check out some of the "easy" lists that are available online and at gardening shops. Many people have had good luck with coneflowers, zinnias, cosmos and Russian sage.

There is no rule that says you have to choose from these lists for the first garden you grow. These plants are simply the easiest to plant and grow. Once you have mastered "easy" plants you will have a better time with "harder" plants.

Starting a garden is a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. If you take some time to learn about gardening ahead of time there is no reason that the garden you want to start shouldn't thrive. Have a blast in your garden! It's a reason to get outside and play!
