Stay Green with Immersion Heat Exchangers

Heat exchangers probably aren't the most popular topic during a weekend barbecue

. On that note, unless you work with them, they're probably not the most popular topic at any other time either. However, whether you work directly with heat exchangers or you don't, you use them nearly every day. Heat exchangers have a variety of uses including, but not limited to, space heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, power plants, chemical plants, petrochemical plants, petroleum refineries, natural gas processing, and sewage treatment. Undoubtedly, you encounter one or two of these uses at one point or another. But, let's set the large, industrial uses aside for now, and, instead, focus on the small-scale uses that affect you.

Basically, a heat exchanger transfers heat. Your water heater is, perhaps, the most common place where you'll find this in your household. And, anyone who's ever lived without hot water can tell you how much of a godsend water heaters can be. Without heated water, washing dishes is much more difficult and taking a shower can be, well, painful. Hot water makes life easier. And at the end of the day, the one to thank for that hot water is your heat exchanger.

There are two kinds of heat exchangersshell-and-tube heat exchangers and immersion heat exchangers. Shell-and-tube heat exchangers are typically suited for high-pressure, industrialized applications. So, as we did before with the large-scale uses, we're going to discard shell-and-tube heat exchangers for now. Immersion heat exchangers, however, are used to heat water by electricity.

Essentially, an immersion heater is just what it sounds like. It's a PTFE-coated device that is immersed in a liquid. Then, through electricity, the device transfers heat to the liquid. Yes, it's that simple. The PTFEcommonly referred to as Tefloncoating protects the device from any corrosive materials. The lack of a need for replacement, along with the use of electricity, makes immersion heat exchangers a rather "green" product. Since all heat is generated within the liquid or process, virtually 100% energy efficiency is achieved.


And, while this still might not surmount a debate over steroids in baseball at your next barbecue, it might be useful knowledge the next time someone brings up home improvement. These days, going green is always a hot topic, and home owners will never stop discussing ways to improve their house.
