Stay Safe On The Road This Autumn

Many people think winter is the only time of year that you need to be extra cautious

on the roads but in actual fact you need to pay attention to the weather throughout the year if you want to avoid accidents on the road.

As with all other seasons, the autumn brings with it a number of risks that all drivers should be aware of. One of the biggest risks seen during this time of year is due to the days shortening, which causes the sun to be lower than usual. Many drivers can be easily dazzled by this, making it difficult to drive safely.

Though you may not think that a little bit of dazzle from the sun can cause an accident, it can, and there are a number of factors that can make it worse. If there are scratches or chips in your windscreen they can significantly magnify this problem, as can poor visibility due to a dirty windscreen. Having ineffective windscreen wipers can be the cause of this, and simply replacing them can greatly improve your visibility by getting rid of dirty streaks over your windscreen. You should also make sure that the inside of your car windscreen is clean, and a simple wipe over it with a damp cloth every now and then will do this.

During autumn the first cold snap is usually felt, and frost may start to appear on your windscreen in the mornings. Driving with frost on your windscreen is never advisable, as it will reduce visibility, so invest in some good quality de-icer now so that you have it ready for future use.

Another obvious risk caused by the autumn weather is that of falling leaves. Leaves can collect in the gutters along the street and can end up blocking drains, which can cause minor flooding. Driving through large puddles and along flooded streets is a lot harder than many drivers think, and some can even lose control of their car due to hampered steering. You may also find that, if there are wet leaves over the road, braking will be more difficult, especially when going downhill.

An easy fix for this is to make sure that your tyres are in good condition, with a minimum 3mm tread that will help when driving in the upcoming autumn weather. Tyres with this thickness of tread can also be used in the winter.
