Stay Safe On The Roads

Riding around on motorbikes has always been that little bit more glamorous than four-wheeled

modes of transport - or, for that matter, cycling - and this is just one of the reasons behind its perennial appeal. For several generations, people have been drawn by the allure of motorcycling, whether its the speed, the slight element of risk or simply the look that draws them in. Indeed, biking has long been associated with rebellion and living on the edge, as epitomised by films like Marlon Brandos The Wild One. But as easy as it is to be intoxicated by the dangerous image of biking, the vast majority of riders are well aware of the need to stay safe on Britains roads and pride themselves on being considerate and level-headed motorists.

One important way to reduce the risk of being involved in a serious accident is to ensure your bike remains in good condition through regular maintenance. Make sure your motorbike is serviced by a professional every so often so that any mechanical faults or flaws are found before they can cause problems further down the line. Admittedly, taking your bike to the garage to be seen to by a mechanic is probably one of the less stylish aspects of biking, but it can save you money in the long run and lower the likelihood of severe problems in future.

When youre out on the open road, it can no doubt be tempting to bomb around bends at speed. After all, bikers are more exposed to the elements than their four-wheeled counterparts and the sensation of speed can be truly exhilarating at times. However, its important to make sure this doesnt cause you to take leave of your senses and its essential to be a considerate road user at all times. When youre flying around a tight bend, its harder to ascertain what hazards might be in front of you, so should you hit a patch of ice or oil you could find yourself hurtling out of control and, as a result, at risk of serious injury or even death. The same goes for overtaking as frustrating as it can be to be stuck behind a slow Sunday driver, overtaking on narrow, windy roads is potentially a recipe for disaster.

No matter how experienced a biker you might be, youre never immune from the possibility of being involved in a serious collision. But by taking a few simple precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of injury to yourself and other motorists.
