Stay Safe by Avoiding Home Security Mistakes
Stay Safe by Avoiding Home Security Mistakes
Whether you have a good common sense about home security or not, there are certain things that the average person takes for granted. Making common home security mistakes is one of the easiest ways that people all over the world can avoid unwanted burglaries. By thinking like the burglars think, you can put yourself in their shoes and see your house from an intruder's point of view. By keeping your home off the burglar's list, you can stay safer and live your life with one less thing to worry about.
Hiding the spare key. One of the most common mistakes that people make today is hiding a spare key on their property. Although it is a good idea in theory, hiding your key is one of the most dangerous things you can do if it is not well hidden. If you must hide your key to prevent yourself from every being locked out, make sure that it is hidden in a place that nobody would think to look. Avoid hiding it under a doormat, in a potted plant or under a rock close to the door. Instead, take time to think of a clever spot where it will not easily be found. If you trust your neighbors, it is recommended that you leave the key with them instead of hiding it on your property.
Fix broken locks. Keep in mind that the majority of burglars enter through a main door or window. Knowing this, it is not difficult to explain why it is so important to make sure that all doors and windows are properly secured at all times. No matter how long you are going to be away from the house, make sure that you lock all doors and windows. If a lock is easily picked or broken, make sure you immediately replace it to avoid giving any burglar an easy entry.
Turn on your alarm. Obviously, your home security system does not do you any good if it is not turned on. One common mistake that people make after buying a good alarm system is failing to activate it. Make sure that every time you leave the house, you activate your alarm system. Furthermore, do checks and update your alarm to make sure that it is working properly at all times. Replace the batteries frequently and test run your alarm on a regular basis to make sure it is providing you with the safety you need.
Keep your landscape maintained. If you have trees and other bushes on your property, make sure that you keep everything well trimmed and maintained. Avoid providing burglars with any hiding spots that give them the ability to camp out on your property, waiting for the perfect moment to rob you. Keep your grass cut and any weeds or shrubs trimmed, making it difficult for others to move about your property without you noticing.
Although you obviously cannot avoid all burglaries, avoid making these errors and you'll have better home security. Be smart and use common sense to keep you and your family as safe as possible.
