Stay Safe in Your Car in the Snow and Ice

Stay Safe in Your Car in the Snow and Ice

This past Christmas period has been one of the coldest for many years, with plenty of snow and ice for a white Christmas. As fun as it is to play in the snow and certainly creates a picturesque scene for many motorists, the coldest winter weeks were a nightmare. The snow and freezing temperatures meant many motorists have had accidents, breakdowns or significant delays to their travel arrangements.

The New Year brought more wintery weather and so motorists had to be extra careful on the roads as they returned to work. The motorways and main roads were gritted with rock salt but many roads were still treacherous and some councils were slow to get trucks out on time leaving many of the UK roads icy and laden with snow.

Drivers are more likely to have accidents in these conditions as their car's accelerating, braking and most importantly their handling can be severely affected. A lot of cars have safety features such as Anti Lock brakes but even with these, during bad weather conditions, you should still stick to a low speed and be ready to brake much sooner than you would normally. Stopping distances also increase dramatically so you should leave plenty of space between yourself and the vehicle in front of you, watch out for any problems such as cars up ahead braking.

Clearing your cars windows of snow and ice can be a pain in the morning; you're barely awake and you have to get outside and scrape the ice build up off your windows which can be a pain. This can be helped by thinking ahead and placing newspapers, towels or large car covers over your vehicle to protect it from the frost. Better yet, clearing the junk out of your garage if you have one and park your car in there overnight to prevent the need to scrape ice off your windows at the crack of dawn.

During the winter a lot of motorists leave themselves open to car crime by leaving their engine running to warm up the car and defrost their windows whilst they enjoy the warmth in their house. Keys already in the ignition, car thieves will often see these cars as easy targets. Make sure you stay with your car if you need to leave it running, some cars now have heated windows that mean you won't be waiting very long to get rid of any ice.

In wintery conditions make sure you drive carefully and plan ahead as you'll likely be adding some extra time on to your trip. As long as you keep safe on the roads then getting to your destination will not be a problems.
