Staying Calm behind the Wheel

One of the first things that we do when we get into an accident is we tend to freak out. Little do we know that many accidents can be prevented if only we pay attention while we are driving and stay calm behind the wheel.

For starters, whenever you are driving, you should try your best to rid your vehicle of any and all distractions. I still recount the story of how my boyfriend acquired a brand new GPS device. The whole point of having a GPS device is so that you don't have to waste time looking at a paper map because the GPS is voice activated meaning that it can literally read you the turn by turn directions for the names of streets and roads that you need to take in order to get to your final destination. However, on this one occasion, shortly after my boyfriend bought a GPS for his car, he was still getting used to it. After five minutes of driving, he realized that the GPS was giving him the wrong directions. As it turned out, he had put in the wrong address for where he wanted to go. So, instead of pulling the car over to the side of the road, he decided instead to try to fix the problem with the GPS while driving. I sat there the entire time, watching him struggle to keep an eye on the road. Then, suddenly, I yelled at him to pay attention because his car almost drove off the side of the road. He wound up pulling the car over into a parking lot so that he could more safely re-program the device, but that was one driving incident that I will never forget.

This is what happened with a woman who was involved in a car accident recently in North Carolina. One of my police friends told us a story of how he responded to a car accident in which a woman had apparently been driving too fast, realized that she had missed her turn and then wound up over-correcting her steering, which resulted in her car flipping over several times off the side of the road into an embankment. When my friend arrived at the scene, they found the woman's lifeless body thrown several hundred feet from the car in a tree. Her car was totaled, and she had died instantly. As it also turns out, she was not wearing her seatbelt. Had the woman reduced her speed (or simply not driven as fast) when she realized that she missed her turn and instead took the next road or exit, she might still be alive today. Staying calm and reducing her speed would have made a definite difference instead of getting flustered once she realized that she had missed her turn.

Whenever we are behind the wheel of a car, we always have the choice of whether we are going to drive responsibly or not. The choice is yours. Choose wisely.
