STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) also called STIs (sexually transmitted infections)

are infectious diseases spread from person to person through intimate contact. Although primarily spread through sexual contact, some cannot be blamed on your partner infecting you. STD testing is important and should not be ignored.

Some things to look out for are, white, grey or yellow discharge that may resemble a milky lumpy substance . A new smelly odour, unusual bumps on the vagina or penis, lower abdominal pain, or pain on intercourse. As well as painful urination, itching and warts. It is always best to immediately talk to a doctor if you are worried.

If you go for a yearly checkup with your doctor, ask them to test you for STDs, and make sure you know which ones they have screened you for. You can also go to family planning clinics or some countries have specific sexual health clinics, they are discreet and it is better to be aware, catching anything in the early stages. Treatments can range from taking oral medication to having an injection, and for the STDs that cannot be cured such as herpes treatments to ease the symptoms are given.

The test is quick, easy and could save your life, do not be embarrassed to go, the doctors see these things frequently. The tests range from having a blood sample taken, to giving a urine sample, or swabs. Depending on your symptoms you will first be examined, the fluids then may be taken and results can take up to 2 weeks. The HIV virus however, can take up to 3-6 months to show up in tests.

The next best thing to never having sex, is to always use barrier protection for all sexual contact. Use condoms correctly and do not use Vaseline, creams, or lotions with them. Sex in a hot tub or pool may break down the condom due to the chlorine in the water, as well as washing off any spermicide on the condom. Have regular std testing if you are sexually active, and always consult a professional should you have concerns about anything medical.
