Steadiness Style (DiSC)

These individuals are patient and undemanding, often showing sympathy or loyalty to those around them. A high-S will reflect qualities of patience, calmness and openness. They are not outgoing by nature, however, and they rely on a more assertive virtual team member to take the lead.

The S-style's particular strengths can be summarized as supportive. S-style individuals are motivated by cooperating with other team members. They are dependable and they are effective listeners. They are also persistent in approach, having the patience and restraint to work steadily at a task until it is achieved. They respond well to a predictable, harmonious and friendly work environment. However, they are not comfortable with unpredictable change, disorganization and aggressiveness.

It is crucial for you to identify the S-style in your virtual team because if they are struggling, they tend not to immediately let others know. For example, when I was teaching a class, a woman came over to me and said "I hate my job." So I instinctively asked her why, and she said that her boss wanted her to be an aggressive sales representative. This was difficult for her because it was everything that she wasn't. She would go home every night and be frustrated because her boss was trying to get her to be assertive and direct. This went on until one day she decided to sit down with her manager, and said that her job was draining her and it was very frustrating.

Here are a couple tips on identifying these individuals within your virtual work environment:

1) Risk mitigation - S-style individuals have a tendency to think about the impact of a project and the associated risks. They need to see the big picture before they can move forward.

2) Process oriented - A high-S will need to understand the process of how a task needs to be completed in order to approach it. For example, if you were to assign a high-S a task, they would immediately ask you how you want it to be done.

3) Quiet - During virtual meetings, S-style individuals will tend to be quiet unless spoken to. They will not give quick decisions. They need time to process the information before stating their opinion.

4) Systematic approach - By nature, S-style individuals tend to approach situations with a structured manner. During meetings or brainstorming sessions, they will talk about the pros and cons of suggested ideas.

You now have a clear and concise understanding of the Steadiness style and its implications to the virtual setting. I hope this will help you identify and adapt your operations and communications with the S-style individuals to better accommodate to their behavioural patterns.
