Steam Carpet Cleaning Vs Dry Cleaning
he eternal battle that wages on in the carpet cleaning business is not good vs
. evil. It's not science vs. faith. It's not man vs. nature, or even man vs. food. In the carpet business you have the struggle that is wet vs. dry. Two opposing forces, in a constant....well, maybe that's a bit too melodramatic for this subject. Let's discuss the differences between wet and dry cleaning carpet.
Wet cleaning is the most common practice for cleaning carpets. Wet cleaning, as the name suggests, uses water to clean your carpet. The two methods for wet cleaning are shampooing and steam cleaning.
Shampooing is a carpet cleaning technique that uses a machine that generates foam that is then worked into the carpet. Dirt and soils are stirred up and then trapped in the foam and then left to dry, sometimes overnight. The foam is then extracted with a vacuum cleaner.
Steam cleaning is the most recommended method for cleaning carpet. This method uses steam from hot water and a detergent to penetrate deep into your carpet fibers. This mixes with the dirt and the soil and is then extracted by a very high-powered vacuum. Because steam cleaning uses very hot water it can also kill many germs and bacteria living in your carpet.
The other type of carpet cleaning is known as dry cleaning. Although it's called "dry" there is a small amount of water involved. With dry cleaning a powder is spread over the carpet. The powder consists of detergent, a dissolving solvent, an absorbent, and a small amount of water, just enough to make it moist. This powder is massaged into the carpet by a machine and then vacuumed.
The advantage of steam cleaning is that it gives you a deep, thorough cleaning. The disadvantage of steam and shampooing is that it takes a little longer due to drying times. Depending on the cleaning you may have to wait anywhere from 2-24 hours for the carpet to dry. Also, if the carpet is not dried properly you may get dirt rings from the damp fibers attracting dirt.
Shampooing and dry cleaning are considered surface cleaning. This type is not as thorough as a good steam cleaning. But the advantage of dry cleaning is that it is faster because of the lack of drying time. Also with dry cleaning there is less chance for dirt rings to reappear.
The type of cleaning you receive will depend on the type you need. When you hire a professional to take care of your carpet needs they will have the qualifications and knowledge to assess the proper technique for your cleaning needs.
