If you need to replace a toilet seat then first of all determine the type of toilet you are having. Also check the brand and model you are having. Considering the style of toilet bowl, whether it is rounded or elongated is also very important. Measure the depth and width of the existing toilet seat using a measuring tape.

One more thing that is important to measure is the distance between the centers of toilet bolt snap covers. When you have got a record of all the information, you can buy a toilet seat from any local home improvement center that satisfies all your requirements.

Make sure the toilet seat comes with bolts as you would replace the old toilet seat bolts, particular if they are metal. Unlike plastic bolts, metal or brass toilet seat bolts have the tendency to rust and decay over time.

For replacing the toilet seat, break the toilet bolt covers with the help of either a utility knife or a thin common screwdriver. Now with the help of a wide tip common screwdriver, take out the toilet bolt screws.

You may also need to have an adjustable wrench for this. Normally you can use just your fingers to hold the nuts while you unscrew the bolts. Sometimes bolts and nuts (particularly in metal or brass toilet seat) become fused together and you need to apply a little more torque to take them out.

After removing all the bolts, discard the old toilet seat. Now clean the area around the toilet bolt and remove all the rust or green discoloring present there, especially if brass bolts were used.

Now position the replacement toilet seat over the toilet bowl and install the new bolts. Attach the nuts to the bolts on the underside of the toilet bowl and gently finger-tighten them. Like this, you can successfully change the seats of your toilet.
