Step Right Up For Branson Show Tickets

When you purchase Branson show tickets, you may not realize that you will be taking

part in the latest evolution of one of the world's most popular entertainments. But it's true, nevertheless, especially if those tickets are for the acclaimed Dinner Adventure.

Many people, unfortunately, think of circuses as "kid stuff." However, this isn't the case and really never has been. Circuses originated in ancient Rome, when horse trainers would show off their tricks in a stadium, along with chariot races, staged battles, and exotic animals. And during the Middle Ages, traveling performers kept the circus-performance tradition alive.

The modern circus didn't really appear until 1868 when Philip Astley of London created the first modern circus to show off horsemanship skills in order to promote his riding academy. For added flavor, he soon included clowns, performing dogs, and acrobats. And it wasn't long until that circus came to America.

In the early stages, it was a modest affair with only 10 horses and eight human performers. The show included equestrian tricks, acrobatics, feats of strength, and "comic songs by a vocalist," according to an 1895 New York Times article. The ticket price was about 30 cents, a bit less than todays Branson show tickets, but both the old and modern circus offered incredible entertainment value.

While the circus developed in America into the three-ring, under-the-big-top extravaganza familiar to most of us, it was evolving differently elsewhere. After the Russian revolution and the creation of the USSR, Vladimir Lenin envisioned the circus as "the people's art form," equal to opera, ballet, and serious theater. The Moscow Circus School opened in 1927 as the State University of Circus and Variety Arts so students could learn the official state gymnastics program.

Because of these divergent evolutionary branches, American and Russian circuses are distinctly different. For example, American clowns are generally silent. That's because American circus clowns generally performed in a noisy, three-ring environment in which they were not easily heard. But Russian circuses are usually performed in a theater setting, so the clowns speak. And because Russian circuses are based in theater, they attempt to elicit wide emotional responses in the audience instead of merely relying on the razzle-dazzle characteristic of American circuses.

In the early days of the modern American circus, most patrons had to stand in the open air. Even when the Big Top developed and circuses began to be performed in tents, everyone hoped for clear weather and dry ground. Branson shows, of course, including the Dinner Adventure (which is, fittingly, set in the context of the Moscow Circus), take place in comfortable, climate-controlled theaters. What's more, the best seats are not reserved for the VIPs: everyone can enjoy a great show.

You might say Yakov Smirnov's Dinner Adventure is the latest evolution in circuses, combining American glitz with Russian theatrics. The music has evolved from small music ensembles to current popular hits, and the popcorn, peanuts, and cotton candy have been replaced by a full Russian feast. Whether you're just looking for a night out or the latest and greatest in entertainment value, you'll want to get your Branson show tickets soon.
