Stepping up to step up - Welfare to Work

With a vested interest in the future of the UK, Alderwood Education will be contributing to the daunting task of evolving skills and employability to help repair and grow UK plc. The Work Programme, launched by the Government in 2010, is aimed at supporting the most vulnerable people and helping them break the cycle of benefit dependency and will be Alderwood Education's key thrust of activity over the next year.

With the most recent unemployment figures showing one in five 16-24 year olds are jobless, not to mention the country's unexpected 0.5% economic downturn, the UK needs to act fast. With an emphasis on the link between skills and employability, the Work Programme aims to do just this. Representing a big change for Welfare to Work in the UK, this programme strives to create a structure that focuses on people as individuals and gives providers greater freedom to tailor the right support to every need. Alderwood Education will be one of the integral cogs in ensuring that those organisations delivering the programme gear up to meet this end goal.

Its focus is to aid the delivery of the programme at grass roots level as in order for it to be a success; the right delivery staff is imperative. Assistingorganisations to recruit and select the best talent, Alderwood will pull from a wealth of resources, namely its 40,000 person strong database and extensive experience within the Welfare to Work/ Work Based Learning industries, to help meet these Government targets. Inevitably, there will need to be an increase in staff, amongst both prime and sub-contractors. Crucially, these staff will need to be from a diverse range of backgrounds, bringing with them a mix of skills, abilities and experiences in order to deal with and help the range of job seekers who will be from a multitude of different cultures and capabilities.

Key aims of The Work Programme include:

To help a broader range of job seekers;

To see more than 2 million people on Welfare to Work programmes within a few years;

To achieve sustained, long-term employment;

To focus on linking employability & skills.

Welfare to Work is an increasingly important sector in the UK. With the Government aims set at 80% employment, The Work Programme will play an essential role in meeting the target.Aiming to have this new programme in place nationally by summer this year, Alderwood Education is perfectly placed to lead the way in recruiting for this initiative. As an expert in the sector, it will help companies gear towards the end goal and work to put Welfare to Work on the map as an attractive career path.
