Steps Given To Season And Maintain Your Humidor So Cigars Will Stay Fresh Until Ready To Smoke
Buying a humidor is an important investment to keeping your cigars well cared for until they are ready to be smoked
. But did you know that you need to season your humidor before even one cigar is planted inside the box?
To start, as with anything newly purchased, read through the manufacturers directions to fully understand how your particular humidor works. You dont want to do anything that would void the warranty. To start, gather some distilled water (never tap) and a clean and dry sponge or cloth.
Dampen the cloth or sponge and wipe down all of the cedar wood inside of it including the trays and lid. You dont want to oversaturate the wood with water because it could damage the humidor. You also never want to pour any amount of water inside the humidoralways just use a cloth or sponge. The next step is to put the damp sponge on top of a piece of cellophane or plastic bag and put inside the bottom of the humidor. Be sure not to oversaturate the sponge and it must not touch the wood. According to the directions, fill the humidification device with distilled water or humidifying solution according to the manufacturer directions. Wipe any water from the outside of the device and place in the humidor. Now the really easy partyou need to wait 24 hours.
After a day has passed, you repeat the wipe down process exactly as before but this time, you dont leave in the sponge at the end. Now wait another 24 hours. By the end of another one-day cycle, your humidor should be safe to use as long as you dont feel dampness anywhere inside of it. Unfortunately if the humidity level is lower than 72%, you need to do it a third time. After you have been using your humidor for a little while, you may notice that the humidity levels might go up or down. Dont be alarmed and think it is faulty because this can happen for a few reasons. Temperature changes in your home can cause humidity levels to change- a/c units, heaters and open windows can all have an effect.
So what do you do if the humidity level is too high which can lead to mold forming inside the box? Take the cigars out and put in a sealed plastic bag and they will stay safe for two days to a week. Add a little white Silica pack (which keeps moisture out) and put in the humidor for 24 hours and check humidity levels and see if it came down. Conversely, if the humidity level is to low, which can cause your cigars to get too dry, follow the procedure above to season it and that should help get the humidity levels back up to the correct 70 to 72% level.
