Microtia is a congenital birth defect that affects the development of the external ear
. This ear deformity can cause partial or complete hearing loss depending on the severity of the microtia. Children can correct the external ear deformity with surgery or ear reshaping, but many choose to leave it, especially is the microtia is unilateral.

Children who are going to have microtia correction surgery to repair their hearing loss should be told what is going to happen during their surgery by you, that parent, and by their doctor. Microtia congenital ear deformity can be repaired in some cases, but each is different. Your child may have such a severe case of microtia that they may not be able to fix their hearing with surgery.
Parents of children with microtia hearing loss may be hesitant to get the surgery done based on the cost of the microtia surgery, but most insurance companies will cover the cost because of the need to have this congenital hearing loss ear deformity repaired. The child will need sound hearing for many occupations and simply to live a normal life.
Microtia repair process is very intensive because of the need to harvest cartilage from the ribs to use for the reconstruction of the external ear deformity brought on by microtia. Your child will have to remain in the hospital for recovery for a week or more. Depending on the severity of the microtia, your child may need reconstruction of the ear canal or just ear reshaping. This will affect the length of the actual ear repair surgery.
Two months after the cartilage is taken, the surgeon will form and attach the earlobe of the ear. Your child can return home that same day and must only take it easy to keep the ear clean and undisturbed. Children born with microtia ear deformity are no different than most children, they will want to go out and play and parents must ensure that it doesn't get too rough. The microtia repair surgery may take longer if the incision is infected or irritated by rough play.
Five months from the initial surgery, your child with microtia will return to the hospital to have the outer ear formed and attached. The final surgery is performed on the ear another three months later to form the tragus, or pointy part of the ear that will protect debris from entering the ear canal. At this point, your child will only have the scars to show of their microtia. In most cases, their hearing loss will have been completely repaired.
After the surgery is finished, your child may return to normal living with the exception of strenuous sports or rough housing.
