Different Degrees
Clinical-psychology training programs have two recognized and distinct degrees. A Ph.D focuses on innovative and effective research into the human condition. A Psy.D is for those who wish to treat patients. Both have the same high standards of ethics and professional standards.
Courses of Study
A person my choose to become a licensed counselor after completing a masters program. To be a psychologist they will need to receive a doctoral degree. Most practitioners with a Doctor of Psychology degree provide service to individuals. There are other clinical-psychology training programs that prepare students for research. Individuals should decided which area they wish to be their specialization before starting courses.
APA Accredited Programs
The American Psychological Association (APA) has many basic courses of study. Intervention, social causes of behavior, cognitive and affective, assessment, cultural differences, research methods, child development, professional standards and others. These are considered the basics needed to provide the best possible treatment for all persons.
Experience
Students are also required to treat patients while under the direct supervision of licensed psychologist.
Clinical psychological training programs require this real world experience take place in a hospital, psychologist office, public health agency, or university. The internship last one year and must include 2000 hours. Students have not qualified for the degree until the supervised hands on experience is completed. The location and type of experience should be determined according to the area of specialization the student plans to follow.
