Storm windows are essential in protecting the main glass of the frame. These panels can be installed from an internal or external placement. Also known as screen panels, they are most commonly found in countries which experience four seasons, making ventilation available during summer and heat-sufficient in the winter.
Homeowners should compulsorily learn the methods to replace storm windows in order to equip oneself with the knowledge of do-it-yourself know-how. First make sure that the area panel is covered properly with a sheet or a layer of plain cloth. Set glass cleaners and spray lubricants side by side in order to facilitate the swap procedure.
The next move is to remove the combination of the screens and carefully place them on a drop cloth. If there are traces of rust or dust, you could apply sandpaper to the affected area thoroughly until they are spotless again.
A soapy bucket of water together with a dry cloth or a long sponge can be used to swab the tracks. However make sure that the tracks are not clogged with the existing dirt. You could clean the area with a toothpick by poking out the muck from the holes.
An alternative way of sanitizing the tracks is by vacuuming them after the surface has dried. Remove any debris and then lubricate the edges with lubricant sprays such as WD40 which is normally used at the two sides of the edge. After completely wetting the sashes and latches with a dampen cloth, make sure you wipe the drips at the metal points using a dry cloth.
Reinstall the sashes by turning them around to the other direction.
Do not forget to caulk the sides of the screen without covering the holes at the corner because they are purposefully laid there for ventilation purposes. Replace storm windows carefully in the original position to prevent malfunction.
