Sterling Silver Jewelry With Brilliant Diamond Cubic Zircon Stone
Cubic zirconia is a synthetic material created in the laboratory
. The word "cubic" refers to its symmetry (CZ is isometric).
Although initially used as a diamond substute, people today often buy cubic zirconia in its own right. It is increasingly being marketed not as "artificial diamond" but as "genuine cubic zirconia". It is used in all forms of jewellery, from engagement rings and ear studs to belly rings!
CZ vs Diamond
Like diamond, cubic zirconia is very hard (it can scratch glass) and has a high refractive index. In its clear form it closely resembles diamond. It can however be produced in a variety of colours and cuts. And, of course, more of us can afford to buy CZ!
From a distance it's almost impossible to tell cubic zirconia from diamond. Even if held in the hand it can be extremely difficult for anyone other than an expert to distinguish the two without the use of specialist equipment.
When used as a diamond substitute, CZ usually has slightly less brilliance but slightly more prismatic fire. Modern production of CZ usually results in a stone that is virtually flawless - mother nature is rarely that perfect. CZ is also about 75% heavier than diamond.
Another difference is that diamond is a thermal conductor whilst CZ is an insulator. This property can be used to distinguish between the two using appropriate measuring tools. Such a test is usually performed by customs officials.
