Anabolic androgenic steroids are often seen in use among athletes of all kinds. From baseball players to Olympic stars, steroid users are in the news from time to time. In addition to such notable people, often young athletes are using steroids in high school and college as well. While the majority of steroid users are young male athletes, both male and female models have been known to use the drugs as well. Some people working in physically demanding jobs such as law enforcement and military jobs have also been known to use steroids effects to bulk up and enhance productivity.

Steroids effects go beyond the appearance of bulking up and the enhanced performance on the field of play. The effects of steroid use on the body are many and some can be severely damaging. Some of those effects are:

Kidney problems- since steroids are toxic to the body they wreak havoc on the kidneys by stressing them and possibly leading to high blood pressure as a result. The symptoms of kidney problems are swelling in the lower legs and ankles, low back pain and fever.

Cardiovascular issues- steroids effects increase the level of bad cholesterol in the blood. High levels of bad cholesterol often lead to blood clots, making those who take steroids at risk for blood clots that can cause heart disease and strokes. By provoking a fast increase in body weight, steroids cause blood pressure to rise and this increases the user's risk for a heart attack or stroke.

Feminism- this happens to men only, when the excessive testosterone in the body turns to the female hormone estrogen. Estrogen causes problems such as the formation of breasts, impotence, decreased libido and shrunken testes in men who take steroids at length.

Psychiatric problems- many people have heard of 'roid rage' when referring to steroids effects on athletes. Roid rage is manic behavior that is characterized by aggressiveness and reckless behavior. This mania is often followed by depression that puts the steroid user at a high risk for suicide.

While steroids effects may look like they are helping an athlete's performance, the outward bulkiness and vigor easily belie the severe damage being done to the body from the inside out. Heart problems, kidney problems, liver issues and psychological problems are not things to take lightly. Any one or a combination of these things can lead to serious illness or even death of the steroid user.
