Basically, the dilemma can be broken down in this way: if you don't know what the word means, then that's it. There's no process of elimination here, because you've been blocked off by a test obstacle before you've even started. If you don't know what the word means, then there's no way you can determine the important relationship between the words...
...And that means that you can't even have a go at an educated guess.
Sure, the makers of this exam don't penalize you for guessing on the test. But let's face it - that really doesn't give you the comfort you're looking for when you're staring an unknown word in the face.
So when you come across this dilemma - and believe me, you will - what are you supposed to do?

The answer's simple: include these steps in your test review, and you won't ever have to worry about this dilemma again!
*Don't waste your time trying to focus your MAT test study on learning every word in the English language - that's an absolute waste of time! Instead, focus your precious time on learning more about prefixes, suffixes and roots of words. Even if you've never seen a specific word in your life, you can usually break down its meaning by looking at the root of the word.
*If you can't recall the meaning of a word, try to think of a time when you've heard it being used before. The human mind is an amazing tool - by remembering a time when it's been used, your mind will be able to figure out its meaning from these contextual clues.
*Sometimes you encounter a word that just won't give you any help. That's when you take a chance and guess. Answer "C" for every question you don't know - it'll up your chances of scooping up valuable exam points.
