Everyone knows someone who is especially difficult to buy Christmas gifts for; it is a fact of life

, and choosing a gift for that particular person is one of the many aspects of Christmas shopping that we do not look forward to. In fact for many people it ranks just below dodging through the gathered throngs of people who crowd the festive high streets for months and months before the big day itself; and just above spending more money in a single month than at any other point during the year (unless you have taken a really, really expensive holiday that year).

For a large number of people, the individual that is most difficult to buy for is a man, due to the simple fact that men typically do not give away as much as women when it comes to hints, and they do not talk nearly so often about what they might like to have bought for them. This means that a lot of men up and down the country end up with the same Xmas gifts each and every year, since they are unwilling to share the information necessary for their loved ones to make the right decision when it comes to what to buy for them.

How many years has the man in your life received socks or a scarf from at least someone in his family? Nearly as often as he might have opened a bottle of whiskey or a crate of beer perhaps. It does not take much effort to choose that kind of Christmas present, and it does not show that you really know your loved one at all, since they are just standard gifts like flowers on Valentine's Day; just really standard.

That does leave the question on what to get for him though. If you are buying for a man in your family; particularly someone who is older (i.e., not a child; they are much easier to buy for), and perhaps someone you do not see all that often; you may be looking for what we call a stocking filler. Just something small that shows you have thought about him at Christmas time, and it does not have to be particularly expensive. In fact, stocking fillers can go down just as well as the bigger and more extravagant gifts on Xmas morning, especially if you have done your research and found something that shows how much he means to you.
