Stop Delaying Changes And Start Making Your Processes More Efficient
There are projects that seem to have been put off year after year
, even if it could really help the production and efficiency in your business. These projects could be anything from rearranging the tool room and storage area, to put the material closest to the point of use. You could always involve your suppliers to help you with putting this system in place and it might even require closing things down for several hours.
These obstacles are all reasons not to go ahead with the project and they are all excuses for why things do not seem to change. Perhaps this is the year to go ahead and implement the improvements and get the ball rolling. After all, these things are not just hurting your productivity, but also your growth and continuous improvement that is necessary to improve your business.
Sometimes you and your employees are so used to working around a problem or some other obstacle that you almost forget it's there. You may be so accustomed to it that you almost forget about it and it's been years since people have complained. Maybe it has become just another part of everyday life and it's just how things are. Maybe it's time to solve the problem this year and make it go away forever.
In order to be truly efficient, you have to start eliminating wastes that are in your way. Have to work around something to the extent that it slows everything else down is a waste. It could mean that you don't have enough space or you aren't set up in the best, most efficient manner.
If you have to travel half way across the plant to get a tool that you use often, couldn't it be located nearer the end user? Just because it has always been in the cabinet next to the boss's office doesn't mean it should always be there. Just by saving a few minutes of walking everyday can lead to hours of more productivity every week. How many times does Joe go and get the tool each day and how much time does he spend talking to Veronica on his way to get it? Not only is the walking a wasted step, but everything that happens on the way to get it, every distraction that catches the workers eye is wasted time and money. Something so simple can make a huge difference in productivity.
