For many people, one of the first signs of aging is the appearance of eye bags

, caused by the skin about the eyes losing its elasticity and beginning to sag. In most cases, this can happen relatively early in life and can leave you feeling less confident. Unlike other signs of premature aging, such as developing grey or white hairs, it can be near impossible to hide, meaning that you are constantly worried about other people noticing.

Blepharoplasty is used to remove the excess skin and fat from the lower and upper eyelids, giving you a renewed youthful appearance. Eye bag removal is a fairly straightforward procedure, but it is still a surgery and so you will need to attend a consultation with a surgeon before you can book a date for it. On the day of your surgery the surgeon will make markings on your upper and lower eyelids in preparation for the procedure. Upper eyelid surgery is most often carried out with the use of a local anaesthetic and a mild sedative, and the surgeon will make incisions of in the natural creases found on your eyelid, so that any scarring will be barely visible. They will then remove any excess fat and stretch the skin to give it a smooth finish, before suturing it in place.

Lower eyelid surgery is very similar, although it is usually performed under general anaesthetic. The incision will be made just below your eyelashes; again, to hide any scarring. The excess fatty tissue that is commonly known as eye bags will be removed and then the skin will be stretched and stitched into place. If required, any resulting excess skin will also be removed.

The recovery process for upper, lower or combined eye bag surgery can take up to two weeks, and you will need to take time off work during that time. Before your surgery you should buy a gel pack to act as an ice pack that you can use after your surgery to limit swelling. You will need to avoid bending down as much as possible and use any eye ointments that have been given to you as required. You must also attend a post-operative appointment to check on your progress.
