Stop Puppy Nipping At Your Hands

A puppy is probably the cutest thing in the world

, but if it's an issue, you need to stop puppy biting as quickly as possible. Many owners don't realize that this behaviour can lead to issues with dominance and aggression later in the dog's life, no matter how cute it might seem when your puppy is rolling around on the floor.

The idea is to teach your puppy stop biting at a young age. This is an ideal time because they tend to realize that when they bite siblings, the siblings will bite back. Once your puppy hits 8 weeks old, he or she should already know not to do it. Then again, the mother doesn't always get eight weeks to control and eliminate this issue.

The Early Days

Any family that takes a puppy home before the 8 week mark or was never introduced to the issue should be taught quickly. After all, you don't want your puppy to go from nipping someone to biting them.

However, during this time you do not want to hit your puppy. Taking this route will leave them in fear and develop various phobias or anxieties. Later on down the road it will lead to aggression issues as well.

If you want to stop puppy nipping then start addressing the root of their behavior. The best way to do this is by encouraging good behavior and discourage any bad ones. Playing games with the puppy is only going to confuse them, which can also lead to aggression. You will also want to avoid wrestling, tug of war, or any sort of chase games that could lead to nipping.

Consistency will be very important in training your puppy. If you really want to stop puppy nipping, you cannot grow soft or let the dog get away with anything. You're doing this all for its own good.

The Training

Enrolling them in obedience classes is a great choice. There are trainers there that will take them through bite inhibition classes and mimic the behavior of the puppy's mother. Soon the puppy will realize that biting is not socially acceptable. Training like this also helps them feel comfortable around other dogs. The end result is less aggression, and maybe even eliminating it completely.

Early, when you try to stop puppy nipping, redirect the behaviour to something constructive like a chew toy or bone. If you say "No!" and then give the dog a toy to chew on instead, they will often learn very quickly that the finger is not okay, but the toy is.

Then of course you can always use the hurting sounds that puppies use. When he/she nips at you and hears your response they will think they caused you pain. It doesn't want to do this and in most cases it startles them enough to stop puppy nipping.

Training to stop puppy nipping and biting is a very important part of the relocation process, especially if your puppy is very young. Ideally, your puppy should understand that by the time they are 10 weeks old, biting is not okay. It will make the years to come much less stressful and the risk of potential aggression the future much lower.
