Stopping breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a wonderful experience for mothers and their children

. It allows them to bond with each other and provides baby with everything they need to grow healthy. As soon as they find out they are pregnant, many women immediately decide they will breastfeed, they run out and buy maternity wear and nursing clothes, available from Bella Mama, and daydream about how wonderful it will all be, but most of them don't consider what will happen when they have to leave their beautiful new baby and return to work.

Mothers who choose to go back to work often find themselves painfully torn between their child and their working responsibilities. They realise that breastfeeding their baby is the best possible way of feeding them, but it just isn't practical if they need to get out and make a living in order to support their family once their maternity leave is over.

In order to make the transition from breastfeeding to bottle feeding less painless, it is a good idea to put the process into motion gradually. After all, the breasts don't just stop producing milk because you decide you need to stop breastfeeding. When you feel your child is ready to stop breastfeeding or when you need to return to work, if they are old enough for solid food start to gradually add other foodstuffs into their diet. This will mean they will need much less milk than previously, allowing you to slowly decrease the amount of milk you produce. If your child is not old enough to move onto solids, your breast milk for them is the best solution. Wean them from the breast gradually and get them used to drinking from the bottle instead. Eventually, they will no longer rely on you to feed them from the breast, leaving you free to work or attend to other important matters in the meantime.
