Storage Area Networks (san): An Overview

These days, every organization requires basic facilities and infrastructure to run the enterprise

. Normally, all IT companies have standalone servers, which are connected to their network connection. This connect helps employees of the organization to access the data within the same network of area. All these networks and servers are useful to provide the access internally, but other devices like modems and routers provide external internet access. Information is rapidly growing with the organizations and the servers are facing the problem to store the data in hard drives, which have limited space. So the technology has implemented a new storage network, which can store the excess data efficiently. Most of the organizations are using this storage area networks (SAN) to increase the business efficiency with high performance and low latency. It is scalable and flexible towards the logical structure of the storage devices.

Storage Area Network is helping the organizations of all industries to provide access to all application servers and shared storage devices. It enables the process of disaster recovery and provides access of storage devices to servers. These are very expensive and work efficiently to provide enough space in hard disk drives. It is the collection of storage networked devices, but completely diverse from other networked storage devices like network attached (NAS). It is completely different from NAS in using the protocols and hardware.

It is accessed through fibre channel, iSCSI, infiniBand over Ethernet protocols, but users cannot connect to SAN storage directly as they are connected to other network using IP or TCP addresses. These TCP/IP networks are implemented primarily to provide the access of system data, but in other aspects these networks are really suitable for reading and writing files on web servers and file servers. When it comes to fibre channel, it can only read and write the file in individual storage blocks rather than file level. SAN can provide high consistency of access data which is located on external storage systems. It centralizes the data storage to provide high security and has the control of communication and data.

Well, SAN is completely different from LAN and WAN networks, as it decreases the LAN load by moving the input-output traffic to other network. SAN can easily rebuild data from the faulty disk to spare dick within the time limit. Storage federation is one of the categories of SAN that provides more volume of data between homogeneous storage systems. Like other categories, it is more efficient to balance workloads and maintenance.

Virtual storage appliance is one of the interesting software in SAN which is able to use host based DAS (Direct Attached Storage) and symbolizes this capacity as a shared capacity. An organization prefers SAN to increase the hard disk drives space and to get efficient speed by storage devices.
