. The most common reason is people simply have too much stuff and they can't part with it. For those who don't suffer from the fear of getting rid of excessive property there are other valid reasons to need a storage unit, including moving and needing a place to store items in the interim or a new relationship that has involved a merger of property and this is the stuff the other person didn't green light for the new adobe that you are not ready to get rid of just yet.
What you store probably isn't as important as where you store it. There are a lot of different types of storage rental units to be found with various levels of security available. The most secure units will have live on site managers giving a 24 hour level of protection in conjunction with the use of security cameras to watch the gates, any entry points and the units themselves. Ideally the storage units are in a compound surrounded by six foot tall fence with the entrances secured by a code lock gate. Your code is set by you and as long as you are current on your rental fees you have access during the site hours.
On the other end of the spectrum are the storage units with absolutely no security other than the padlock you have on your storage unit door. You may have seen one of these units in a rural out of the way location that basically just consist of a set of storage units with no gates, no locked entrance, no cameras and no outside security. These may be secure due to their remote location but then again that is also what makes them so vulnerable to criminal activity occurring undetected.
How much security you want for your property in storage will depend on several factors including your security comfort level, your budget and what options are available in your area.
If the price differential between maximum security and a variation of the minimum security storage units, upgrade to the best you can afford. If your belongings are worth keeping in storage they are probably worth keeping as safe as possible while they are out of your physical control.
