Stranger Anxiety

Several bad things have been happening around lately

. Robbery and murder, not to mention terrorism, have been spreading around in a manner that is worse and quicker than any virus. Actually, parents cannot be blamed of being a little strict to their children. This is obviously because they are just concerned of the welfare of their children. One of the popular means of parents in protecting their children is by warning them, either in a matter-of-fact or in an exaggerated manner, to keep away or never talk to strangers.

Parents define and describe strangers to their children as someone who do not reside in their home, not talked to by their parents, and those who do not belong to their extended family. In other words, strangers are usually defined as persons that are unfamiliar to you, in all aspects, be it through physical appearance, name, or even voice. It is usually due to this persistent warning that children become influenced of the negative image of strangers, based on their parents' warning that strangers could harm them and take them away from their parents. Having this negative image of strangers, children even infants can eventually develop stranger anxiety.

Stranger anxiety is defined as a form of uncertainty that children feel and experience whenever they come across or are exposed to people who appear unfamiliar to them. Stranger anxiety is common to children, but it is most likely encountered by infants who are between 6 months to 12 months old. Symptoms of stranger anxiety may appear and be noticed in many different forms, the most common of which include sudden pause in laughing, moving, or interacting to relatives while staring at the unfamiliar person, cries uncontrollably and hiding behind a parent or any relative who is carrying him or her, upon seeing strangers. This type of anxiety is considered normal and typical, as it is a part of children's developmental process.

The main rationale of having stranger anxiety of children is mainly based on two significant concepts: one is that he or she is a separate human being, and two, that people and things are temporary, they come and go simply because they are all different, separate beings. As for the parents who are worried because of this particular condition, it is very important that they understand what is going on with their child, and that they must support him or her throughout his or her growth. Patience is a very important virtue because parents must not scold or threaten their child. They must not force him or her to socialize. Asking and telling goodbye, even friendly and gently introducing him or her to a new person may be scary and upsetting for their part at first, but eventually they will learn how to get over it. In brief, being aware of this condition does not just help and guide parents and guardians in effectively caring for children and babies, but it also assists in developing a harmonious relationship between the children and babies, and their family members.
