Strasburg To Have Mri

When phenom pitcher Stephen Strasburg hit the MLB

, his future was brighter perhaps than any other prospect in major league history. And for good reason, as Strasburgs hundred plus miles fastball, along with breaking stuff than can only be described as nasty, makes him a hitters nightmare. As Strasburg took to an MLB mound, he certainly delivered. A 14 strikeout performance in his debut against the Pirates heightened expectations. Though there were a few bumps along the road after that, Strasburg has been solid, posting a 5-3 record, with a 2.91 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 68 MLB innings.

The stuff that he possesses has been seen only in a few others. The one thing that Strasburg had to avoid was injuries. Mark Prior and Kerry Wood, to name a few were power pitchers with great starts, who eventually succumbed to the bug. The only thing that could possibly stop Strasburg in his tracks would be getting hurt. Unfortunately for him, and the Nationals, Strasburg has run into his second injury problem in the last month.

While he returned from shoulder inflammation, which put him in the 15 day disabled list, another problem has risen up. The phenom returned from his original injury to make three starts. However, in his recent start against the Philadelphia Phillies, he obtained an apparent injury to his wrist. After striking out Raul Ibanez, he grimaced and shoot his right arm after a pitch to the next batter. He was immediately taken out of the game afterwards.

Manager Jim Riggleman all but guaranteed that he would miss his next start. The team is awaiting results on an MRI, and is hopeful to have a better grasp on what exactly the injury is. Reports had already come out stating that the Nationals had already shut Strasburg down for the season, though GM Mike Rizzo called those reports inaccurate. Regardless, though, perhaps shutting him down would not be a bad idea, no matter how serious the injury is. He is the future of the franchise, and of major league baseball. There is no sense in risking this kid any more, for this season. Let him come out and start on opening day next season.
