A mobile workforce can provide many advantages but for it to be successful businesses must create a strategic plan. This takes time and a certain level of investment. For a workforce to be mobile there is a need to invest in mobile technology, computers and internet lines. These are typically easy to setup however initial costs can be high. There are many considerations to be looked at and in this article we will review some of the main ones.
Communication
Communication is key to any business and having the ability to communicate with employees quickly and easily is essential. There are many technologies that can be used to do this but it is important to set out clear communication channels for employees working remotely. Many businesses use mobile phones and a chat client to communicate but it ultimately depends on the businesses needs.

A clear business plan needs to be set out for what technology you want to use and how you want to use it. Most businesses want employees to be able to access files on the server via VPN. What are your security needs for this?
Employees are often on the move and need to keep up to date while doing so. The introduction of mobile broadband and smart phones means that this is now possible. Would it be effective to purchase these setups for all or just some of your employees? There are significant costs associated with these so it's good practice to have a clear plan.

Work is often about producing deliverables to meet goal and objectives. These need to be clearly communicated to employees. There needs to be a plan in place so that employee's know exactly what is expected of them. Without a clear plan employees can have a low level of output and be poorly motivated. Goals and objectives should also be reviewed and delivered in a consistent fashion.

Development in communications technology means that people are accessible 24 hours a day unless they turn these devices off. It's important for businesses to realise that employee's have a life outside of work and not to contact people at certain times. It's important to set out boundaries so that people don't have to respond to queries after a certain time. This will keep employees happy and allow them to relax in their free time.
A mobile workforce is often a powerful one but to utilise it to its full extent careful planning needs to be put in place. A poorly formed or mismanaged mobile workforce could cost a business heavily and impact upon its reputation. A well managed mobile workforce can be highly rewarding to both employees and a business.
