Strategy Implementation: Governance Is Essential

When implementing a strategy, the focus is usually on doing what needs to be done to get the strategy done

. However governance is also required to ensure that the processes applied stay within the organizations agreed business rules and norms.

In addition, governance ensures that any collateral damage to other activities is minimized. In many cases, collateral damage is subtle, because it may stem from taking resources that are needed by other activities. For example, this could reduce the motivation of people doing other activities, leading to sub-optimal performance.

Governance requires Executive oversight (Board or Executive managers) and usually includes:

Schedule management

Cost management

Quality management

Risk management

Issues management

Communications management (including Meetings)

People management

When implementing a strategy, most of these governance activities are performed by line managers. So it is imperative that all managers and people involved can understand what is happening and what they need to do in real-time.

Sometimes project management is employed to provide governance for implementing a strategy. However the mechanisms of project management will quickly try to isolate the strategy from other activities. This makes the involvement of line managers more difficult and raises a lot of issues that need to be managed.

TASKey has shown that governance can be simplified by breaking governance activities into actions that need to be done, when and by whom. These actions can then be added to relevant peoples To Do lists, so governance and implementation actions can be managed together.

This can become incredibly complex when done manually. But purpose designed software can easily track, sort, create and update personal To Do lists with a minimum of effort from the people involved.

The greatest benefits from managing both governance and implementation actions together are:

everyone involved knows exactly what they need to do (or not do)

feedback about changes to actions can be provided to relevant people in close to real-time

progress reporting can be automatically driven by completed actions/To Dos

governance oversight and decisions directly relate to what is actually happening
