Strawberries In Your Home Garden
Strawberries are great antioxidants and vitamins
. Their most potent ingredients are when they are on the vine, and you can eat them straight off of it, if you want too! The flavors of freshly harvested strawberries are just amazing. If you have a problem with sweet tooth cravings, eating a few fresh strawberries will satisfy your sweet urges and be very healthy and refreshing at the same time.
Where can strawberries grow?
Strawberries could make pretty ornamental plants, so the could be grown in containers on the patio. As long as they get sunlight, they can be grown in a condo, a small home garden, or an apartment. Any place that gives them enough sunlight is a great place.
A hanging basket might also be a pretty choice, so they can hang over the edge. The beautiful lush green leaves on these plants are very decorative. The fruit is a bright red when ripe and basically the plant is not only an excellent source of food but visually very ornamental. Placement of your container, whichever type you choose, should optimally be in full sunlight for the most fruit. In partial sunlight, they will produce, but not nearly as well. If you are working with restricted light, try alpine strawberries.
Strawberries in containers:
The strawberries need space to spread out while they grow so the container needs to be a large vessel. The root system will need about a foot of depth in the soil. The material of the container can be almost anything from wood to terracotta to some kind of plastic. The drainage and depth are the important aspects. Plants need to have about ten inches between so the number of plants will depend on the size of your container.
What kind of soil do strawberries need to grow?
Loamy soil is the best, because drainage is as important as space. Shredded bark or peat moss is good for your plants. The container's bottom should have draining holes, and if you're using compost, an inch layer should be enough. Plants enjoy nitrogen, so fertilizer can be as strong as 10-10-10. If you want plants your first year, everbearing varieties are good. Keep your plants well watered and enjoy.
