Stress and Mobile Phone
Stress has become a dominant theme of modern life. In a society which never switches off, with 24/7 connection to entertainment, social networking and instant connectivity via, mobile phone and email the demand to deal with everything in an instant has placed people under great pressure. The days of letters being transported by coach, requiring several days before delivery and reply have long passed. With mobile phones everybody can carry a contact device around to be called at any time. With Blackberry, I-phone and similar devices emails can be answered on the go. As a result naturally occurring breaks in demand for concentration get less and less. As these technological advances are relatively recent, just 10 to 20 years old, many people have not yet learned coping strategies in dealing with them and reducing the constant intrusion which they can present. The imbalance between constant unrelenting demands and undeveloped coping strategies can result in experiencing stress.
At the time the first steam engines started to cross the country many people feared them due to their incredible speed. People were not used to travelling as fast as in the region of 15 - 20 mph. Our day driving at 70 mph along the motorway is considered normal. Over time people develop strategies to deal and cope with changes and they do not cause significant stress anymore.
Stress can cause a wide variety of symptoms such as increased irritability, increasing anxiety, sleep problems, social withdrawal and low self esteem. The immediate medical symptoms can be minimised by use of medication, but unless coping skills can be learned, stress becomes a way of life and dependence on medication to keep this under control is inevitable. Simple techniques can help to get to grips with demands and result in long-term improvement.
Businesses suffer significant economic loss due to employees being unable to perform to their best. In the UK alone 14 million working days were lost due to stress in 2006 costing in excess of 530 million according to the Health and Safety Executive (1). Stress assessments and good occupational health (2) support can help to minimise the impact.
