Stretching Your Ballerina Pumps For The Perfect Fit
Ballet styles pumps, also known as ballet flats
, are the rage these days with international designer labels churning out these shoes. Models like Kate Moss and celebrities like Victoria Beckham have been spotted wearing these ultra-comfortable and yet sexy flat shoes, which are paired with almost anything from short shorts to maxi skirts.
Such a switch from the towering high-heeled shoes for which women have a penchant for - case in point, Lady Gaga - to flat pumps is a welcome development, indeed. It cannot be overemphasised that high-heeled shoes from the strapless sandals to the thigh-high boots can lead to foot problems like bunions, hammertoes and even changes in foot anatomy. The health issues can climb higher, too, such as in the case of lower back pain, not to mention the high risks for injuries sustained from falling on teetering high heels.
However, you may have problems finding the perfect fit for your feet when it comes to ballet shoes. The problems may stem from the foot defects borne from years of wearing high heels like the above mentioned bunions and hammertoe. Fortunately, you can stretch your new ballet flats with the following steps.
Towel It Wet:
Before anything else, a word of caution: This technique of stretching ballet pumps especially around the toe area should not be used on materials like leather and suede. Otherwise, the durability and beauty of these materials will be compromised and that is something you do not want.
Wet a small towel with water and then squeeze as much water from it as possible. Think damp but not dripping wet. Roll it into a ball as small as it can go. Stuff the rolled towel into the ballet flat particularly on the toe area and leave it there.
As the rolled damp towel dries up, it will expand and, thus, stretch the flats. You should then have ballerina pumps that are as comfortable as these are beautiful.
Spray to Stretch:
If your pumps are made from leather, we suggest using a stretching spray to stretch the material to comfortable levels. Stretching sprays can be bought in most shoe repair shops and online sites.
Be sure to follow the instructions on the label of these stretching sprays. You want to avoid any defects on the ballet pumps from showing up. Take note that too much stretching of the material means a less comfortable fit and less beautiful look of the shoes on your feet.
You can also purchase a two-way shoe stretcher. This will stretch the material of the pumps in many directions - vertical and horizontal - depending on its positioning.
Hair Dryer Emergency:
Now, if rolled towels and stretching sprays are not exactly to your liking for whatever reason, try getting your trusty hair dryer and putting it to work. Not on your hair, obviously, but on your ballerina pumps.
Get your ballet pumps, turn on the hair dryer and get to work. Blow heat on the pumps for at least 30 seconds, rest for 5 seconds and then blow again. Perform these steps until the ballet flats feel warmer to the touch.
Wear thick socks on your feet and then wear the still-warm pumps. Walk around for a few minutes. The material should stretch and, thus, mold comfortably to your feet.
Of course, there's no better way to stretch your ballerina pumps and make them mold like second skin to your feet than to wear them as many times as possible.
