Striking A Balance Between Size And Efficiency When Purchasing A Washing Machine

If you are in the position of needing to buy a new washing machine then you will be faced with a wide variety of options

. Naturally you will want a machine that meets your requirements whilst offering the best value for money in terms of initial cost and running costs. This can sometimes be difficult to determine so it helps if you first look at what features are particularly important.

For most people size is an important factor and although the majority of washing machines come in a standard size that is 850mm high by 600mm wide, to fit under a kitchen unit, the depth will vary between models so it is important you take this into account. If you are really pushed for space then you may want to consider a small top-loading washing machine that is very narrow.

Many washing machines are a similar size but their capacities can vary from 6Kg loads all the way up to 12Kg. Try to choose a machine that has a load capacity that is appropriate for your needs. If you find that the size of your loads can vary a lot then look for a machine that offers a half load setting so you are not wasting excess water and energy. Most good washing machines will offer this feature.

Energy efficiency is important because this will determine the overall running costs of your machine throughout its lifetime. Look for a machine that has been awarded an Eco-efficiency rating of A or higher and check what programmes these ratings apply to. If it is an eco programme that you will hardly ever use then this is worth taking into account. Some washing machines offer a delayed start feature that can be useful if there are certain times of the day or night when your energy rates are lower. In addition, spin speed will affect how dry your clothes are after a wash and an extra 200rpm will result in around 15% drier clothes. This could make a difference to your bills if you use a tumble drier or switch the heating on to dry your clothes. However, it is worth noting that faster spin speeds can increase the wear of the machine and make it more noisy. There are models that use anti-vibration motors to combat this.

Lastly, look at the guarantee that is offered when you purchase a particular washing machine. Those that have a long lifespan will have a good guarantee period that covers the cost of parts and labour. This could potentially save you a significant amount of money.
