Strip Clubs: The Laws In Your Area
Strip clubs are usually highly regulated by local laws
. Some areas of the country are much more prudish with their laws than others, with many cities across the country refusing to host these businesses at all. Generally speaking, the larger your city, the more relaxed the legal status surrounding these establishments is going to be. If you're interested in knowing what laws apply to your local joints or you want to open such an establishment in the near future, you'll need to get in touch with your city government and get the scoop on the statutes. Here are some of the legal restrictions often placed on these businesses.
Rules on Nudity
While it may seem like a contradiction in terms, many strip clubs do have laws placed on them that disallow the women to get fully nude when performing. In fact, it's probably fair to say there are more cities with this rule than without. What level of nudity is permitted can get more or less strict from there. Some cities only insist that the women keep their bottoms on, while others have statutes on the books that require pasties be worn at all times. Sometimes whether the establishment sells food can play a role in determining the status, giving the owner something to mull when deciding how to move forward.
Hours
One might think strip clubs would be allowed to stay open as long as the owners wished to keep the doors unlocked. This is the case in some areas, but by no means all. Many cities have imposed curfews on nightclubs and the like, something which would extend to these businesses as well. The sale of alcohol is often prohibited beyond a certain time of night in many cities as well, which may discourage the owners from keeping the business open past that time. In some cities, having the establishment open on Sunday is against the law. Certain communities even place greater restrictions on the strip clubs than they do the bars regarding hours of operation.
Location
As with any business, there are often restrictions regarding location and zoning placed on strip clubs. These may or may not be more restrictive than those rules regarding any business in the community. More often than not, they will be. As an example, there may be laws regarding how close to schools and churches the businesses can be located. There may also be rules regarding how far they must be from residentially zoned districts. Due to overly restrictive zoning laws, some owners actually choose to move outside major city limits to take advantage of relaxed laws.
