Criticism of students unions
Criticism of students unions
Within the recent decade the reputation of students unions was spoiled significantly. The problem is that undisciplined students are often elected as members of these bodies of self-government. These underachieving students might enjoy popularity among their fellow students and be elected by them. Still, becoming members and speaking for the rest of the community, they might express certain inadequate demands and make adults doubt the benefits of the unions in general.
It should be admitted that adults might be disillusioned after voting for the wrong candidates as well. It means that experience of students unions elections might be beneficial for young people to realize that their voting is consequential. Educators often complain that some learners have distorted views of the students unions. Hoping for the unions advocacy function, students might fail to meet the deadlines and break discipline. The same goes for some members of the unions. Some of them consider their social activity to be an excellent excuse for not preparing for their classes or even playing truants from them.
Measures to be imposed
Still, there is always a bad apple in the crop. The initial idea of students unions has plenty of advantages. It means that college authorities should better impose measures for reforming the unions instead of abolishing them.
1.It is advisable to work on a set of requirements for becoming a candidate during the unions elections. Colleges need to minimize undisciplined students chances for becoming members of the unions.
2.The process of elections should be improved as well. It is possible to invite more independent observers, for example.
3.College authorities and current members of the unions should raise he students awareness of their rights and the main unions functions.
