Students taught to value English Language from young
Finite and non-finite verbs? Finite verbs can stand by themselves as the main verbs of sentences
. For example:- I kicked the ball. Whereas for non-finite verbs can't - The punctured ball. But as for the various non-finite or verbal forms - infinitives, gerunds and participles. The older students would remember how our teachers used to drill grammar into us. This drilling lasted a lifetime and the English Language was spoken correctly. Having learnt the language strictly through grammar, I deviated from the norm and started introducing grammar into my English lesson. After all, conversational English is structurally different from formal English. Formal English is used to impress, to create a tone of dignity , or to provide a suitable role model for someone who is still learning. While, conversational English is meant to be used between equals. In the long run, in order to keep our identity intact while using English should be a transplant rather than a mere import in our culture. Good speaking habits have to start from young. The thing to do is for all schools to inculcate good spoken English. This is too obvious to need repeating.
