You may find the following story interesting.
Most people believe that nicotine is the main reason cigarettes are addictive and therefore nicotine replacement therapy is a logical quit smoking cessation therapy.
However its long been observed that nicotine replacement therapy does not work very well.
Some have branded it as a waste of time that doesnt help smokers quit long term.
Why is this so? I propose a couple of reasons.
Firstly: Research has shown that a mixture of factors in cigarette smoke other than nicotine, play a significant role in craving and reinforcement.
Even though these unknown factors dont occupy the nicotine receptors in the brain the way nicotine does and are probably not addictive, they definitely play a role in smoking behaviour and reduce cravings and withdrawals.
How do we know this?
Research participants were given de-nicotinised cigarettes i.e. the nicotine was either removed or existed at a very low level.
These look, taste and feel the same but deliver almost no nicotine. (They also still deliver tar and carbon monoxide so no one is saying they are good for you!)
In one study, when smoking either real cigarettes or the de-nicotinised ones, BOTH gave a reduction in cravings and in fact the authors could not find a correlation between the nicotine yield and behavioural effects!!!
In other words the level of nicotine made no difference at all.
Other researchers simulated various stressful situations during smoking abstinence, situations that normally made subjects feel bad, and studied how relief was perceived after smoking.
They did not find any association between the relief of several of the negative feelings and smoking; regardless of whether they smoked real or de-nicotinised cigarettes.
Again, the level of nicotine made no difference at all.
Relief was not dependent on nicotine intake, therefore, challenging the assumption that nicotine in smoking alleviates negative feeling or mood.
The second reason NRT does not work is this: nicotine is not the only factor in smoking.
Smoking is also about dealing with stress, covering up feelings, the pleasure of smoking and most importantly, the habitual act of smoking. NRT does not address any of these factors.
If nicotine was that addictive every passive smoker would be addicted. They are not.
When you quit smoking with hypnosis you are able to address these factors successfully and in the secure knowledge that you can easily do without nicotine.
