In today's times, almost every graduate in India wishes to pursue an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) or related degree. This has resulted in stiff neck-to-neck competition for admissions in reputed B-schools in the country. Every individual looking forward to take up an MBA course has to clear a Management entrance test like CAT (Common Admission Test), MAT (Management Aptitude Test) and GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test).

GMAT i.e. Graduate Management Admission Test is a Computer Adaptive standardized test undertaken to get through a business school. The test takes about 4 hours to complete and its scores are valid for five years at most of the institutions. It is divided into three sections- Analytical Writing, Quantitative Section and Verbal Ability. The 1st section may be answered in an hour, 2nd in 75 minutes and 3rd in 75 minutes too. After the basics, let's switch to the studying patterns one should and should not follow to crack this fairly difficult test.

-Do's for GMAT preparation:

Set realistic goals and chart out a clear plan as to how many hours can you devote on preparation every day.

Always keep practicing sample papers, guides and verbal supplemental materials again and again to understand concepts.

Take at least 2 to 3 months to prepare fully if a top business school is the only goal as it would help understand the strong and weak areas.

Develop a compliable strategy as allowed by own capacity, abilities & potential and adhere to it as strictly as possible.

-Don'ts for GMAT preparation:

Never think more is more i.e. keep practicing and preparing for the test until last moment as it will help not only in gaining confidence but also help solve more and more complicated problems.


Do not forget about time management ever during GMAT as with 75 minutes each to answer 41 verbal questions and 37 quantitative questions, it definitely needs to be managed well without the scope for a miss.

One needs to stop doing problems one is good at and focus more on problem areas so that the improvement boosts the overall score. It is a great idea to bite the bullet and deal with weaker areas.

Those with higher scores definitely get higher preference in esteemed colleges of US and other English speaking countries. GMAT is applied to over 4,500 graduate management programs at around 1900 schools around the world for more than 50 years. It is the most popular way of getting admission in an MBA college abroad. The fee for GMAT test is $250 and brings one closer to the dream of grabbing a well paying job.

Admission to reputed business schools has never been a cakewalk. With more and more students opting for management program, it has become all the tougher. If one focuses right, practices well, studies hard, concentrates harder, remains alert, then he/she is sure to land to a good MBA college.
