Stun Guns: What Is The Effect Of High Voltage

Stun guns are not designed to injure- they are designed to startle or disable an attacker on a purely temporary basis

. As a result, the current involved is usually tiny; around 0.005 amps. If you discharge a stun gun in the air you will most likely see and hear the result of the electricity passing from one terminal on the gun to the other.

Once you push the prongs against an attacker, the electricity has to pass through him or her. The pain or discomfort the attacker feels when the stun gun is pressed against the skin is caused by the electrons flowing though them from one of the gun's metal plates to the other. The voltage of the gun determines how powerful the 'push' of the electrons is.

So, how does a 50,000 (50K) volt stun gun feel compared to a 2,000,000 or even a 4,500,000 (4.5m) volt stun gun?

Manufactures tell us that 50K volts on bare skin for a second will produce enough 'tingling' and discomfort to cause an attacker to back off and be temporarily disoriented. There is no harm to the skin.

If you deliver the charge for five seconds it will have a greater disabling effect, but since instinct should make the attacker pull away instantly, five seconds of contact may be difficult to achieve.

Fifty thousand volts through a thick layer of clothing will feel much milder whereas a 1,800,000m volt or (higher) jolt will knock an individual to the floor, temporarily paralyzing and disorienting them even through a .5" to 1" layer of clothing. The effect can last for several minutes.

The higher the voltage the noisier the stun gun will be and less direct contact will be needed to produce the desired effect.

So why do the police only use a 50K volt TASER? The reason is that the TASERX26C stun guns the police use deliver penetrating barbs that cycle the electricity into the individual every 5 seconds for 30 seconds, a strategy designed to keep the individual down for at least that amount of time. The police also have other weapons to back them up if an attacker resists the stun gun. These are not available to the public.

Most attackers are wearing clothing. Depending on the season, this clothing may be quite thick. A high voltage weapon can be pressed against the attacker at any point and still be effective. A lower voltage weapon has to be aimed at skin if it is to work at all. To protect yourself fully you may need more than the ability to surprise the attacker. You don't want him or her just to let go, you want to be able to get away, so a stun guns which disables for vital seconds, allowing you to get to safety, could be invaluable.
