When you think of crystal waters and sun drenched beaches in Europe

, you are immediately drawn to places like Amalfi and the Greek Islands. Chances are, places like Sardinia aren't thought of, but why not? The second largest island in Europe (second only to Sicily, and larger than Cyprus) Sardinia is an Italian island, and benefits from its Italian roots.

The Sardinian culinary influences are far flung from the traditional Italian, and glean inspiration from Spanish, French, African and Italian. Meals revolve around the locally caught seafood and spit roast meats, served with fresh vegetables and ragu.

Avoid the tourists Costa Smerelda, where the yachts and yuppies go, and aim instead for the more deserted Costa Verde, which is where the locals prefer to visit. The deserted beaches are pure paradise, and you can surf to your hearts delight, or simply sun bathe; however the mood takes you. Stay in the apartments that adorn the hills for a spectacular view, and all of them come equipped with patios and small barbeques, perfect for cooking the food form the local markets.

Visit the gulf of Orosei to see perfect beaches that you can only reach by a small boat journey. Cala Luna is stunning, with a freshwater lagoon that is perfect for uninterrupted swimming.

The best way to get around the island is to rent a car, and trains are scarce on the island and buses are infrequent and unreliable.
