Two control line stunt kites were not used by public until the early 60s

. The two line control models began to gain popularity in the early 70s. One of the early stunt kite pilots some may remember, Peter Powell. He developed the Peter Powell stunt kite. Somewhat different than what we use today, it had a diamond shape that included a lone inflatable tail. The design is still used today; the purpose of flight was to draw pattern in the sky using the ling tail.

Do you know where the Stunt kite originated? Some of the best old stories about the birth of the stunt kite came from some of the history of World War II. Early naval anti-aircraft gunners received training on how to control two line stunt kites.

The naval gunners were taught to pilot the kites in such a way as to make them very hard to hit. An interesting concept used for target practice was the brain child of Navy Commander Paul Garber. The early kites were of a diamond shape duel control line stunt kites. The kites used were about six foot long or large. One of the earliest references to stunt kite flying was used by the US Navy for target practice.

In the early 80 manufactures produced a new delta stunt kite. This was the start of piloting them in competition in contests. Sport kite flying kind of got a real jump on the sport around this time in history. Team flying contests became a fun spectator sport.

The sport has expanded to precision flying maneuvers in contests. They are stacked in colorful arrays flying exciting maneuvers. Kite fly-ins are held all over the world where you can see delta, diamonds or flexifoils. Along with many of the old Peter Powells there are kites that go by the names Flexifoils, Hawaiians, Hyperkites, Tribys and many others shaped like animals, birds and Rainbow.

The flexifoils are somewhat like a parafoil and if you remember they were invented back in the 60s. The flexifoil named from the flexible spar used in the kites leading edge. The flexifoil kite was and still is one of the real speed demons in the sky.

Another part of kite history from the 80s is the Mirage. One of the first organized kite competitions, pilots would put on a freestyle demonstration that could last as long as three minutes. There were three required maneuvers and judges would rate each pilot with a 1 to 10 with 10 being the best rating.

Development of the best material to make the kites also started in the 90s. A new material thats called rip-stop nylon that is very light and tear resistant material and allows no wind to get through. You will find thats what is most used in modern sport and stunt kites today.

The modern stunt or sport kite flying has indeed become a sport for all ages today. Todays pilots can fly for fun and relaxation, extreme sports, competition or exhibition. Even the spectators get to join in the fun.

As a spectator you need to know just what a stunt kite is to understand stunt kite competition. In the most basic understanding of the stunt kite the description is a kite that has two or more control lines used to do maneuvers in the sky. At some time or another you may have seen a sport kite doing strange things like bouncing around flying very low or even on the ground. This type of kite flying a lot of the time is intentional.
