and fashion experts opine that double-breasted suit will be ubiquitously worn in 2011. The double breasted suits have now been reinvented by designers to make them look neat and trendy "" unlike the earlier versions that were mostly loose and baggy. Jeremy Langmead, editor-in-chief of Mr. Porter says the new crop of double breast jackets are much improved from bulky 80s styles.

"A double-breasted refers to a jacket with wide, overlapping front flaps and two columns of buttons. Generally one column of buttons is merely ornamental and the other is functional. To strengthen the fastening, a functional inner-button will be there to-fasten the over-lapped layers together from the inside. High-street design teams are working overtime to create the right double breast suits for 2011 generation. "To avoid the dad's tuxedo connotation," says John Mooney, head of menswear design at Asos, "we simplified the cut and used a single fastening to keep it modern"

It is a fact that double breasted suits have a tendency to regularly go out of fashion and then to resurface. Double-breasted suit jackets were popular and widely worn from the mid-1930s until the late 1950s, and again from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. Double breasted suits are becoming fashionable once again in 2011. For men who are tall, broad-shouldered, or both, the double-breasted suit is an excellent addition to the wardrobe.

Due to the double-breasted jacket's construction, it is usually recommended not to wear a double-breasted suit unbuttoned. This is because the large amounts of overlapping fabric on a double-breasted jacket tend to gather at the sides when unbuttoned. For this reason, men who want to appear casual, avoid double breasted suits. Indeed, a well-cut double-breasted jacket minimizes girth on all portly men, especially if it has broad shoulders.

Double breasted suits have limitations and it may not be the ideal wear for men who are short-statured or small-bodied. With an extra layer of fabric across the front and two rows of buttons, the double-breasted jacket may drown a small man's physical frame. Although double breasted suits will look trendy in 2011, it is best that men of short build avoid opting for them. Even men of average or bigger physical build may find the double-breasted suit more formal than the single-breasted and therefore less versatile.

Some celebrities like Prince Charles and David Beckham are seen going around in double breasted suits. Beckham, known as a sartorially refined celebrity has been photographed several times this year wearing double-breasted suits. On red carpets in Hollywood, leading men have been found in double breasted suits. Jake Gyllenhaal wore a black Ferragamo tuxedo double breasted for the Oscars while Ryan Gosling was wearing a grey Gucci double breasted suit for a premiere.

The double breasted jackets are cut shorter to make it appear younger and fresher on the wearer. The jacket is also designed to skim the body and not hug it. Market reports reveal that the sales of double breasted suits are already up by 30%, while separate double breasted blazers are up by 60% on last year. These are growing signs that the double breasted jacket style is quietly making its way back into fashion in 2011.
